This entry is part 5 of 10 in the series Good Without God

After careful thought, we decided to look into two programs to give to in the name of Morgantown Atheists for our Good Without God campaign.

For the main program, we are going to Adopt a Road!

Your job, especially if you’re in Morgantown, is to scout out 2 miles of road that meet the following criteria:

  • Any public road is acceptable except highways and unsafe roads. So find something we can maintain safely.
  • It has to be a minimum of 2 miles.
    • It has to be one continuous 2 mile stretch, not an L or T shaped section.
  • It has to be able to be cleaned safely.

Alternative if we can’t find a 2 mile stretch:

  • We can also Adopt a Spot:
    • A state roadside right-of-way
    • No longer than 1/4 mile in length

Please let me know of any and all possibilities as soon as possible so we can get started before it gets too hot. :) Email pictures and other information to Neece.

We are going to do these programs in the name of Morgantown Atheists, after careful thought and discussion.

Our second program is easier. We are going to collect pop (soda) tops for Ronald McDonald House in Morgantown:

Starting now, collect as many aluminum can tabs as you can and bring them to the meetings. Then we’ll get a few of us together and take them to RMH when we have a decent amount, hopefully on a regular basis.

If you can, get your co-workers to contribute to this good cause as well. You can put up a can or something where you work where people can drop them, just as an idea. If you want a little sign to print, let me know and I’ll design something and email it to you.

Not all of us drink soda, but beer tabs will work too. The Ronald McDonald House uses them to contribute towards their rent. It’s nearly effortless and for a good cause.

Any questions, call or email Neece.

thinking outside the boxHello Everyone!

The billboard is up and making the news! You can see all the press we’ve gotten so far here: http://morgantown.unitedcor.org/press . Some of the comments at the different articles are fun and interesting. The Charleston Gazette has 100 comments, the most popular story at the moment. It appears that there are about 3 or 4 positive to each negative comment! Here is the link: http://wvgazette.com/News/200909290601

Rachel has done a great job as our spokesperson. She even got on TV: http://wboy.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=67641 Watch the video too!

So, MorgantownCoR comprises the Morgantown Atheists, the Morgantown Brights, the Freethinkers Morgantown Book Club and the Morgantown Thomas Paine Society. One thing we all want to do is make a positive difference in our community. Through our actions, we can show the traditionally religious people in our area that we are good, moral people too. Together we can make even more of a difference.

As Rachel said earlier today, “Right now, we have the attention of not just our neighbors, but our state. Let’s show them that we are a valuable force in the community. Let’s have a strong showing for our Habitat for Humanity Build this Saturday.”

You can get all the information you need at the Morgantown Brights page: http://www.morgantownbrights.com/2009/09/27/habitatoct3/

Another project we’re looking into is Adopt A Road. Rachel has already started this process rolling. Please let us know if you will be willing to help clean a road with us. We need to show the Brights that the Atheists, Freethinkers and Thomas Paine lovers are also interested in this great endeavor. Read the rest of this entry »
