Also, here is information from the International Darwin Day Foundation, sponsored by the American Humanist Association, looking for people to sign an online petition to make February 12 Darwin Day officially.

Here is the petition:

Dear President Obama,

As an American who values scientific inquiry and integrity, I urge you to issue a presidential proclamation recognizing Darwin Day on February 12. Darwin Day is celebrated every year on the anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birthday in 1809, and is a day in which people gather together to commemorate his life and work. Charles Darwin was the first to propose the groundbreaking scientific theory of evolution by natural selection—a theory that has done more to unify and bring understanding to the life sciences than any other—and Darwin Day is a celebration of this discovery and of scientific progress.

I believe that issuing this proclamation will send a powerful message that scientific discovery and integrity in our society are top priorities—priorities that are needed now more than ever as extremists with narrow ideological agendas are attempting to undermine science in our schools.

Please stand with me and countless others who value science and discovery by issuing the following or a similar proclamation on Darwin Day.

A chili dinner will be held at 6pm at Kent’s home in Morgantown. Kent and Lynne will cook chili and cornbread. Guests should bring drink/desserts

The First Annual Thomas Paine Doubles Ping Pong Tourney will be held

Dinner,drinks,ping pong ,and casual talk from 6 to 8 , then some serious Paine discussion for about 1 hour starts about 8. Bring a quote, comment, reading, or just contribute/listen. The loose ‘focus’ is “the later years: 1793-1809.

Details:

We took care of a bit of business as we ate good food and talked about lots of different topics.

• Brent has no news about David Mills and his possible talk later this year.
• No more news on the Billboard project, but there is a side project in progress
• Neece has designed a flyer and Brent has volunteered to post them around Morgantown. Can anyone print some up and post them in Morgantown and Fairmont? Just email Neece or Brent for the flyer file, as well as to coordinate with Brent about possible locations.
• Neece is working on a Forum for us here at MorgantownAtheists.com. It’s already up but not configured fully yet. More details to come in the next few days.
• Gerald is working on the Fairmont Library donation project. He’s going to contact them to see about their donation policy.
• Brent wants to add a section to the site called “How Do We Know That?” – Neece will set that up in a day or two at the latest.
• We all talked about some ideas for articles for the site. Coming soon!
• We didn’t vote on the Mission Statement. Neece will set up a poll for that later this week.

It was enjoyable to hang out at a restaurant, eat and socialize with everyone. We hope to see in 2 weeks at the Book Club meeting, and in 4 weeks for another regular meeting!
